Septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery

June 13th, 2009 at 12:25 am

When I was weighing the pros and cons of having this elective surgery I spent a lot of time reading others blogs and experiences. Most of them were 3-4 years old and the methods and procedures have changed since then. So here is my story so that others can have another example when making this difficult decision.

The Diagnosis

Back in April my ear was so clogged that I almost lost complete hearing in it. I hate going to the doctor so I decided to try every home remedy in the book....The book being google. Well nothing worked so I decided to suck it up and head to the ENT. When I arrived, he walked in the room and greeted me. I explained the problem that I was having and he responded with "Has your voice always been this nasally?" Well, "great to meet you too, doc" He quickly cleaned out my ear and brought me to another room where he stuck a camera up my nose to check out the situation. "Do you realize that you only have 10% airflow in your right nostril?" he said. "OK, can you fix it today?" I naively replied. A smirk came over his face and he brought me into his office to discuss the surgery. Being a member of savings advice, my main concern was if my insurance would cover this 100% or would they see this as plastic surgery. Turns out this is a fairly common surgery and my insurance covered it 100% without even a copay. Nice! So I decided to tentatively schedule the surgery and check out the pros and cons on my own.

The main benefits of this surgery are obviously better breathing, less nasally sounding voice, better sleep, waking up more refreshed and mentally alert, and less sinus infections.

I decided to get the surgery done and met with the nurse to sign the papers.

Day 1.

I arrived at the hospital at around 8:30 for a 9:45 surgery time (must arrive 1 hour early for preop.) I was brought back to the preop room, got changed, and was greeted by a few nurses. The nurses got my IV started, gave me a drink for the nausea that would occur from the anesthesia, a steroid, and some Afrin. Two anesthesiologists came in on separate occasions to go over what would happen. They would give me some oxygen in the operating room and some anesthesia through the IV. I would experience a mild sore throat from a breathing tube that will be placed down my throat. Wait, breathing tube? Oh hell no! Don't worry they said, you will be knocked out before we put it in and woken up after we take it out. "Surrrrrrrree, I won't feel a thing", I thought to myself. A few minutes later the doctor comes in and says hello, asks me if I have any questions, and tells me he'll see me in the OR. Next a nun walks in and sits down to chat. Wait, I thought this was a routine surgery...oh man, is it too late to get out of this? I'm not overly religious but do believe and was born and raised Catholic so I welcomed all the support I can get. We chatted for a few minutes and she offered a prayer. In come the operating room nurses and off we walk to the OR.

I get in the very sterile operating room and immediately visions of alien autopsy TV shows come in to my mind. I hardly watch these shows but nonetheless this is what I'm thinking about. One nurse is putting pads on my legs to prevent blood clots and the other gives me the oxygen. The nurse at my feet starts strapping me down with leather straps. I immediately make one final joke and that's the last I remember from the operating room

I wake up to what sounds like a crowd of people saying my name attempting to get me up but it was really only 2. I am fully coherent quickly but have a very sore throat and can't speak for a few minutes. The nurse offers some ice chips and water and brings me to the recovery room where they monitor my vitals. In comes my wife with a very relieved face. At this point I have no pain in my nose but have a killer headache. The headache probably was caffeine withdrawal from the lack of coffee. Damn you Dunkin Donuts...where is the Surgeon General's Warning on those cups! Anyway, I had gauze taped under my nose to catch the ever running river of blood that comes from my nostrils. 30 minutes later the pain starts to set in and the nurse gives me a percocet to help. Oh yeah! She gives me my discharge instructions about 15 minutes later. No lifting, no blowing your nose, no activities, basically stay in bed. That's perfect because doing nothing is what I do best. We leave the hospital at about 1:30 in the afternoon.

I get home and my nose is bleeding pretty badly, easily soaking through the gauze pads. We get home and my wife changes my nose diapers every so often for the remainder of the evening. As the day goes by the amount of blood lessens. Don't be surprised by the amount of blood flow coming from your nose. It's pretty heavy and constant. I snacked on crackers and drank water through a stray for most of the day because I was worried about the after effects of the anesthesia. I took the percocet every 4-5 hours like instructed which took care of the pain in my nose and head. Cold water and crackers helped the pain in my throat. By evening the only pain I was experiencing was my Mets blowing another lead and game to the Phillies. My calendar showed June 12 but it sure feels like September. I take another percocet around 10:30 and head off to bed with the uncomfortable nose diaper on. My nose is ridiculously swollen at this point, almost twice the width that it normally is. Once the percocet sets in I sleep through most of the night. Only waking up when the dog jumped on or off the bed, I can't remember which.

Day 2.

I wake up with a blood free nose diaper and very little pain. All of a sudden...ahh ahh ahh chooo! Holy crap, I think that's what child birth feels like. Note to others: screw manners and sneeze with your mouth open. It's at this point that my nose starts flowing again but this time it's not fresh blood. A combination of snot, dried blood, and other nose goo is now flowing as easily as the blood did yesterday. I'm very congested but in no real pain. At this point it feels like a head cold or a minor sinus infection. I keep the nose diapers on to catch the goodness and have to change them more often than the blood pads yesterday. This, however, is even more disgusting. I decide that changing these pads every 10 minutes is not worth my time and switch to tissues. I clean out my nose with saline spray and get my first real look at everything. I can see what I first thought was a very long nose hair sticking out of my nostril. When trying to remove it, I quickly found out this was a stitch and not a hair. I can also see the bottoms of the 2 splints they put in my nose that I am to have removed at day 7. No pain so far today so I have not taken any percocet. I feel no ill effects from the anesthesia, am not overly tired, and feel like my old self...with an elephant trunk as a nose. At around 3:00 the pain returns with a vengence. It's a deep throbbing pain that percocet takes care of. The percocet also takes care of me and I'm out for the next 2-3 hours. The rest of the day was pretty much the same with throbbing pain and the annoyance of all sorts of gunk coming out of my nose.

Note to those getting the surgery: Have Puffs Plus with aloe available and straws for drinking.

Day 3.

Day 3 was a little better than day 2. There was less "leakage" and less pain. So far I was able to make it through the day without taking any pain medication (other than tylenol) and actually went out to the store for a little while. The worst part about this is that I am starting to get severe cabin fever and am bored out of my mind. We'll have some visitors tomorrow and I'll have to start studying for a mid term next week so that will help. I also can't wait to get these splints out of my nose. They are not painful or uncomfortable but they are irritating simply because I know they are in there.

Day 4.

I have the feeling that until the splints are removed nothing else is going to change. Today was exactly like yesterday with some leakage from both nostrils and just enough pain to use Tylenol instead of Percocet. I was able to have some guests over and then head to the mall and another store for a few hours of "get out" time.

Evenings are particularly difficult. Not for me but for my poor wife. I take the percocet before bed and it helps me sleep throughout the night. The only problem is that I still can't breathe out of either nostril so I snore...loudly. I also wake up with a nasty sore throat that goes away pretty quickly.

3.5 days until the splints come out.

Day 5 - 7.

I was able to return to work and make it through the day. I had no pain with the exception of the stitches themselves. Still had constant leakage coming from above the splints which required me to always have tissues on me.

Day 8.

Splint removal day! Whoohoo! I arrived at the doctor for my 3:15 appointment and was immediately brought into the exam room where I sat for about 20 minutes staring at the diagram of a nose. Finally, the doctor came in with his toolkit. He told me that the removal of the stitch will hurt a bit because he has to pull it tight to cut it. However, it didn't really hurt at all. Next came the removal of the splints. This was completely painless. The second he pulled the splint out a river of nose goo, snot, and dried blood literally poured out of my nostril. The same thing happened with the second nostril. Next, he vacuumed out both nostrils and immediately I could breathe. I'm not sure what I was doing before the surgery but it definitely could not be considered breathing compared to this.

Overall the surgery wasn't too bad and seems like it was definitely worth it.

Glad to hear you are breathing better!
I am on Day 4 post-op from septoplasty and turbinate reduction. My ears are popping and blocking with every sip, can't breathe, plastic splints up there until Tuesday. The thing is, my WHOLE FACE is swollen. I joked that I look like John McCain, and sound like Squidward. Hoping the swelling goes down soon, it's embarrassing! Luckily, I don't have to go back to work for about two weeks, so I'm hoping for the best. Still in a lot of pain, and constant yellowish/clear/crusty flow coming from both nostrils whenever I sit up.

I am headed for this surgery myself. It's been 20 years in the making. I've known I needed this surgery, but truthfully, I'm TERRIFIED of anything that leads to nasal or sinus pain. I was born with enlarged nasal blood vessels and therefore suffered chronic bloody noses (2-3 hours a pop) on a weekly basis for several years. My nasal passages were cauterized several times, the last time being when I was 6 years old. After that - no way! I've suffered sinus allergies and almost monthly sinus infections and I've been on allergy meds for the past 15 years, which has reduced the number of sinus infections to 1-2 times a years.

So, what's making me finally get the surgery? Snoring. It's gotten so bad my husband actually sleeps in the other room. My sister taped me recently when we traveled together to a funeral. Whoops! Had I not known, I wouldn't be looking at surgery now! I'm going to a Seminar next June, and one of the stipulations of my roommates (who were so carefully informed of my snoring by said sister) is that the snoring be rectified.

So, I go the the ENT. The little-bitty camera tube goes up one nostril fine. It manages maybe 1/2 inch in the other before it has to be taken out. O.M.G.

Add to this the fact that my BIL just had the same surgery - twice. The first surgery didn't heal properly (no fault of my BIL). So, he had to go through it AGAIN! (Different ENT this time.) He's loving it now, but he said when they pulled the packing and splints it felt like they were pulling his brains out through his nostrils. Lovely.

Can they just knock me out for the week? I want to go to sleep and wake up with the packing put in and taken out - that and the pain! I have a saying for how I feel when I have a sinus infection - "Cro-Magnum Man". You know, the jutting forehead and cheek bones? That's how I feel. Oohhh, what if that pain comes when I'm healing? It's bad enough when it happens naturally. But surgery?? Aauggh!

I'm 7 WEEKS Post Op and my nose is as blocked as it was before the operation. Absolutely no change. I had serious doubts as to it having any success at all, and it didn't. I can breath from about 5 percent out of left nostril half the time and about 20 percent at the best of times. Completely blocked with other nostril, but it does alternate, sometimes right is a bit unblocked and left completely blocked. Im in CONSTANT discomfort, I can never breath properply, don't even know what its like to breath properly. I feel like im in hell.

It's day 5 post-op for me, septoplasty, turbinate reduction and bilateral endoscopic tissue removal. My Dr. says he doesn't believe in splints, tubes, or packing, so I'm all plugged up on my own. I talked to the Drs. assistant this afternoon, and it seems I can expect to be a mouth-breather until my appointment at day 8 to suction everything out.

I can't sleep breathing through my mouth. It gets dried out, starts to hurt, and wakes me up. I'll take a little drink of water and go back to sleep, for 15 minutes when it starts again.

WOW! I wish I found this blog a few weeks ago! I just had my septoplasty done a week ago, and pretty much blow by blow (heh!) this is how it went for me too! (minus the nun! LOL!) I get my stitches out on Wednesday. Was supposed to be tomorrow but the doc is away that day. Darn him, I want these spints out now to see how much better I can breathe! I can breathe a bit, but not too much. And I notice all the mouth breathing is keeping my lips mighty dry. Thank goodness for the Burt's Bees.

I don't feel like I have much to have sucked out, except maybe from my left nostril, right is pretty clear off and on. I'm sure thats an interesting experienced being shop vac'd out the nose! HAHA!

I am on Day 2 and I am miserable! I wish I could say mine went as smoothly as yours. I've never really considered myself a whiner, but I have been doing just that all day! My heaving bleeding started midway through Day 1 and freaked me out! It didn't help that my doc didn't bother to stop by while I was recovering to assure me that all was looking good so, of course, the heavy bleeding was a shock. I stopped using the Ocean Spray (obviously, not the drink) and used Afrin as he suggested and the bleeding slowed WAY down. No more rushing river. Vicodin was my drug and worked like a charm last night. Today...not so much. The swelling is there and I definitely have the gooey ooze, but the bleeding hasn't stopped entirely and I am now in so much discomfort that even my favorite drug of the weekend is no longer offering any love in return. I can feel the splints and I feel like I've been punched in the face by a 400 pound man with a 400 pound fist. I'm sure that's normal though, right? I've heard several times that the most painful part of this whole process is the removal of the splints and suction of remaining gooey ooze. I can hardly wait. I'm really very happy for you that it wasn't the same for you and can only HOPE it will be for me! Wish me luck!

Had septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery on 3-11-10 and had the splints removed today, 3/17/10.

First 2-3 days had the gauze mustache. Only took two prescription pain pills. Still irrigating and sniff/spitting bloody mucous. My surgeon says see how you do in the next rain or weather change, that will test the success. Much less pain than expected, thankfully. Was breathing at night through my nose by day 3. So far, not so bad. I think I had a very good surgeon and he is very current on techniques to minimize how invasive the surgery is.

This site was a godsend to read! I just had surgery on Tuesday, Jan 4th. It was supposed to be a turbinate reduction, closed septoplasty and insertion of spreader grafts, but in recovery I could hear two of the nurses saying it had been an open septoplasty.

The anesthesia gave me terrible nausea when I woke up. And I ended up getting a couple good doses of fentanyl too, which probably contributed. When I got home it was my stomach that bugged me the most, but on day 2 my nose was killing me, so the percocets were great to have. It's day 3 now and my nose aches, even after having taken pain meds. The pain kinda spreads through my sinuses as if I've been whacked in the face with a two by four. That's tolerable with the pain meds though. What's bugging me the most is the drainage down the back of my throat. This yellow nasty gunk with old blood mixed in. I'm still wearing my gauze mustache, although it's not catching so much anymore.

The best things that I've been using have been the airline neck pillow and my humidifier. Without those items I think I would be very miserable. Oh, and I have a dry erase board where I write down the times I take my medications. Helps when my mind is drug addled.

Had myseptoplasty w/turbinate reduction Wed. 1-20-11. No pain. My issue was the claustrophobia about having my nasal packages blocked. That evening I started to panic. Took a Vicadin to see if that would maybe calm me and vomitted that right away (which produced more bleeding). My husband (who missed his calling as a nurse and/or mother) called the hotline for the doctor, who talked me down from the cliff. Slept sitting upright in a recliner on and off every 15 minutes to an hour all night. Felt the need to keep getting up and moving (from anxiety). Appt. Thursday. 1-21-11 to have packing removed (how come everyone else seems to have these Splint?). Appt. Couldn't come soon enough and naturally I got there EARLY. Was much much better once that was pulled out. Had my first sneeze -which was o.k. constantly irrigating w/saline mist and steam from the tea pot which helps short term for releaving congestion (which isn't going away). I assume I'll just be congested til I am not! On day 4 things are good (just congested). followup w/ doc in one week. I hope this was worth feeling smothered ,anxious and suffocated for the first 2 days. if you can get by that timeframe, it does get better. Toodles - TM, Monson, MA

I am scheduled to have my adenoids removed and turbinate reduction on February 1st. My ENT said that I needed the septoplasty also. When he did the exam and used the tube to see up my nose...one side, the narrow side was very painful. I got a call from my ENT's office saying my primary insurance did NOT approved the later surgery and that they were out of it..(DUH)!! I been on the phone for two days talking to two insurance companies and my doc's office. Very Frustrated at this point and wondering if the first tow procedures will be enough for me to feel better. I have a runny nose every day. Evry two months I get a sinus headache. I snore so bad that my 6 year old son thought I was not home after returning from a basketball game with his dad because he could not hear me snoring UPSTAIRS!. I wake up several times a night and feel very tired everyday. I just want to feel better. The day of the exam he dialated my nasal passages with some kind of spray. I tasted REAL Oxygen for the first time in years. I gave up sprays after reading the fine print on the bottle for prolong use. And I gave up on the Sleep Apnea machine after my husband informed me I still snored. Any advice?

I am on day three. Not too bad. A couple notes after reading some comments above.

I cannot imagine this operation without the splints/tubes, and I'd go to a different doctor if that is what it took to ensure that I had them for the post-op recovery.
Basically, the tubes are long enough to span the areas on which the doc operated. So, you get a clear tube though which you can breathe!

Now, the other big thing making this tolerable is the Neil-Med Sinus Rinse. Its a bottle (and associated packets) which you can use (from the first day) to rinse out your nose. All that blood and gunk gets washed away, and I can breathe really well. I was told to do this 6-8 times a day, but I am probably doing it maybe 12-15 times a day. Seems okay, and its keeping everything clean up there. The packets you put into the bottle with luke-warm tap water contain saline and (I think) Xylitol, so its soothing and non-burning. You can get these at local supermarkets.

What else? If you're taking oxy, better get some stool softeners, and take them starting day one. Take it easy the first couple days. Really get lots of rest and keep warm, because your body will be using a lot of energy to heal up, and if you're wasting that energy doing other stuff, the healing will just take longer.

    Good luck!

I had a septoplasty, turbinate reduction and also had my uvula trimmed for my surgery 3 weeks ago. After the surgery I did not have any pain. I did get ear aches but not bad enough for me to take pain medication. Seven days after my surgery my doctor removed the splints and I am able to breath much better. I have not had any complications up to this point. I cannot wait to start lifting weights and exercise like I used to. I did a lot of research on the internet before my surgery to see how painful it was going to be and I can honestly tell you that it made me more scared than anything. I went into surgery with the understanding that I was going to be in a lot of pain afterwards all for nothing. I was nervous before my surgery because of all the horror stories that I had read about the pain. If you are reading this and are about to have the surgery, do not even worry about it because your surgery might be painless like mine. Good luck.

Just had a septoplasty with turbinate reduction 2 days ago, splints come out tomorrow morning. Med hx-healthy 28 y/o male, multiple fx's to nose when young. Never had nose reset, leaving me with a horrendous deviated septum. Poor breathing, snoring, then recently ear pain with fluid accumulation. Sx lasted ~1hr 10min with no complications known yet (follow up in the am), drowsy once awake in recovery, shipped out pretty quick. Once home, pain in the nose was pretty bad, but nothing compared to my throat. Within about 10min of getting inside my house, I vomited ~3-4 times, mucus and blood that had collected in my stomach. Felt much better after, in regards to the nausea. Pain still in throat and nose. bleeding stopped after about 2 hours, used afrin spray as directed if bleeding. I was in/out of sleep for the rest of the evening/night. slept upright for first 2 nights. lots of postnasal dripping. ate a box of frozen fruit bars and ice water for over 24 hours. soft food first morning. still with sore throat. laid around all day, attempting to eat regular diet, not happening! cleaning my nose with saline every hour or so, gentle q-tip for peripheral clots, vasaline on the outside of my nose due to the swelling/stretching of my skin (felt much better), as day one went by, noticed pain in the upper front 2 teeth and gums as well as worsening in my throat. nose pain not too bad. called MD, said to suck on cough drops and use spray, used both with min help. attempted salt water gargle, a bit more relief (temporary though), honey (minimal). finally, just looked in my throat more thoroughly and found that my uvula was swollen, red with a bulbous white tip. looked it up, come to find out it is "uvular necrosis" caused by either the breathing tube compressing/restricting blood flow or over suctioning. Yah! this sucks. this is considered "RARE" to happen. lucky me!!! i will let the MD know tomorrow at the follow up to see course of tx. will repost after. at this time, day 2, not so drowsy, still taking meds ~4hr-5hrs, antibiotic 2x per day, saline rinse every hour or so, napping upright hear and there. still not able to eat solids due to throat. more fruitbars and smoothies. took a hot shower for about an hour and felt much better after. no bleeding from nose at all, some drainage in the back of the throat. end of day 2 approaching, pain in throat less than day 1, pain in nose more than when i got home, but not getting any worse, distracted during the day, more noticeable at night. looking forward to getting the splints taken out. face still swollen. just hanging in there, hoping for more relief when they come out. short term, this operation sucks, long term, we will see...

Just had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction on August 13,2012. I am getting my splints removed today August 21st. I can't wait. I've been watching youtube videos to get amped upSmile My experience is very similar to this bloggers. The only exception would be that percocet got me really backed up. I was taking some docusate but it didn't really seem to help. I finally had to take milk of magnesia, yummy! That did the trick thoughSmile Percocet has that nasty little side effect of constipation. Like the previous post states I would start taking a stool softner/laxitave together with your pain pill right from the beginning. if not you will also be misearable this way. These splints are driving me nuts they make my nose feel numb and make my upper front teeth numb too. I hope once they take them out I will be able to breathe a lot better. Good luck to all of you getting this surgery done. I like to think this will be worth it in the long run.

I have to say, I was pleased to happen upon your blog. All the others I had been reading were quite frightening.
I went to a new ENT this past Summer 2012. We decided on a CT scan as I had mentioned that an MRI from 2 years prior had shown a crooked septum and a Thornwaldt cyst. After my CT scan, we met again and he went over the scan with me step by step. He wanted to be honest with me and stated that he used to not want to operate on people he couldn't get to at least 85-100% better breathing, but discovered over the years that if you're only at 25% and he could get his patients to 50%, they were happy. So, not to expect 100% being open. That was fine with me. Anything had to be better than what I have.
So, I'm 4 days post op. When I woke up after surgery, I had a nasty headache and my throat was extremely sore. She gave me some Fentanyl. Which I wish I had protested because when I have headaches, narcotics make them worse for me. Then they provided a popsicle, which helped and became my new best friend. In the step down recovery I wanted to have a good cry, but refrained. I think it was a combination of the stress of the surgery being over and the throat pain. My guess now, is, is that the hospital staff that insert the breathing tubes should be more gentle. I looked inside my mouth with a flashlight and saw what is like a red bruise on the rear roof of my mouth. And, four days later , it's still not back to normal. Took me an hour to eat a bagel for breakfast this morning.
Anyway, when I arrived home, I propped my drunk self against a wall and cried for five minutes. I felt better after that release.
I took a Percocet at 3p and only because I was expecting the nasal pain to settle in. Then a half at 630p and a full at 930p. Took no pain medication all the next day. I've been quite obsessive about irrigating - but it usually just leaks right back out or into my mouth - which is gross. I don't sleep that well because I can't breathe - yet noticed some small air passage in the nose which seemed to let up on some of the pressre. Was still waiting for the nose to swell and the pain to set in. I had barely any swelling. Really no need for pain medication, unless I want to get a in longer nap. And, really, the only negatives are feeling like I have a nasty head cold and I'm not allowed to blow my nose. The stints come out Friday morning. I'll be anxious to see how I am after that.
Oh, and I did go back to work today, but the boss sent me home. I was exhausted and he said it hurt him to look at me lol. (Still have drainage, so using the gauze strap) I usually write much better, but still a little out of it. Just wanted to share my experience thus far. If you're nervous and saw a bunch of horror stories, hopefully everyone who has posted here has alleviated your concerns. I totally expected far worse. For a surgerical procedure, this is quite tolerable.

Love your sense of humor, haha. I am about to have the septoplasty + turbinate reduction (in about 4 hours eeek!), and I feel a bit more prepared. I actually called and asked if I would be intubated before reading this and the nurse said yes. I can't believe I had to ask that! Shouldn't they tell you that before you agree to the surgery? Geeze.

I am here sitting writing at 7 am in the morning. Today is day 7 of septoplasty surgery. I woke up at 2 am and again have not been able to go back to sleep. I simply cannot breathe through my nose. Many of you have had nose blockaged problems even before this surgery. I have not. I used to breath perfectly fine, without ever having any issues. I went in for DCR surgery. (stent placed from the corner of my eye to my nose for tear drainage). When I awoke I was told that they had to do a septoplasty to be able to get to the part of the nose that they needed to get to. Since then, I have been in hell. I just cannot understand how people can continually breathe through their mouth. I can't. I spoke the doctor two days after surgery and he said I had no splints. I have my post op appointment with him this morning and I hope he can do something for me. How can people go to work if they can't sleep through the night? Why does it get stuffed up completely, then all of a sudden my right nostril will clear to about 50%? Can someone please tell me at what day did they finally start being able to normally breathe without having long episodes of a clogged up nose. thanks

Lucky you guys.. I'm 18 and had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction last friday 9-6-13. I took almost all of the hydrocodone they gave me... I was in so much pain until today. Im definitely taking a couple hydrocodone before I get my splints removed tomorrow.. I'm really worried about that but also think its going to be very relieving. My splints have migrated lower in my nose.. I'm not sure if I accidentally removed a stitch while trying to get dried gunk out of my nose.. but I can touch the splints with the tip of my finger. They are literally right at the opening of my nose and they weren't before. Ugh I can't wait until this is all over

I am 36 years old with constant congestion (high up & immovable), post nasal drip & chronic sinus infections. I'm having the Septoplasty with turbinate reduction tomorrow. Will probably post when I feel able and welcome any and all tips & suggestions. I have four lively children and not as much help as I expected so whatever I can do to make this easier I will.
    Thank you.

I had rhinoseptoplasty plus turbinate and I'm on the 4th day post op and I'm swollen so bad still and feel like I have a major head cold along with bruising over my right eye and cheek.. I'm all stuffed up and can't breathe at all.. Every time I do the saline spray I swear I feel worse.. It tires me right out and I just want to sleep straight after.. My splints are supposed to come out in the morning which I cannot wait for.. My nostrils feel so burnt and the salt water makes it sting so bad.. I feel very congested and have been since I started the saline rinse which I find puzzling.. I could breathe fine straight after surgery that first day and then come the second day and nurses telling me I had to start to rinse, that's when I started feeling like crap.. I'm disorientated most of the time and just want to sleep all day but find when I do I just feel worse.. So I try and walk around the house for around 20 mins a day holding an ice pack to my head to alleviate swelling and the heat and congested feeling in my head.. For the first 3 days my vision was all blurry cause of the swelling and bruising around my eyes.. The first day was the worst though and I could hardly focus on anything.. I also haven't been able to go to the toilet properly since surgery.. Not sure whether that's the codeine I'm on for pain or not.. I don't feel bloated but I just haven't been able to have a regular day which is very unusual for me.. Eating is the worst and have to chew slowly with mouth open so I can breathe.. I can only eat small amounts cause it hurts to chew.. I don't know how anyone can possibly become addicted to surgical procedures.. This is just hell.. Took me 10 years to do this for myself as I couldn't breathe well before.. I hope when splints come out that I will be able to breathe better..

Just hanging out after my septoplasty+turbinate reduction. It was this morning at 7:30am and now it's 2:30pm. Too tired to really do something, but wanted to post so you all have some more info.

The sore throat for me is the worst part. I swim a lot and so I don't feel claustrophobic about mouth breathing. But the throat is quite sore and the ice water really helps.

My other main discomfort is in the upper front teeth. Like I'm a baby and teething and I want to chew on something rubbery. Yet it also feels like the dull ache of root canal. The inside of my nose stings a bit, like when you get pool water up your nose, but the doctor said wait until tomorrow to start my Neti pot (saline irrigation). He said I could that every hour, and it would help recovery.

But let's talk about some good things, too. :-) Walking from the car to the house I swallowed and noticed that my right ear (the usually-stuffed side) popped, just like the left one. That hasn't happened in at least 20 years, if not longer.

So far it's not as bad as some of the experiences here. It's not comfortable and fun, but comparable to a really bad flu: exhausted, woozy, stomach upset, sore throat, and stinging dry nose that I do not touch at all so I don't upset any stitches and shaping.

I got this surgery because a few winters ago I had a terrible flu/cold and couldn't breathe at all and felt like I was dying. It was rec'd to me 20 years ago, but my father had some sinus work done and said it was very very painful and that scared me as a child.

In addition to flu shots, that episode also got me started on neti-potting, which was not nice the first 2-3 times, but has since been a daily activity for me. If you want to try it, just remember: the weirdness of the first few times is not how it will always be, so persevere for your own health. Since then, I can't remember getting cold or flu. Maybe it's the shots, but I think both help.

So I'll post an update later. Good luck to all of you!

Im in the hospital right now in Korea, after just getting my septoplasty and turbinate reduction yesterday. I felt fine yesterday, groggy, a sore throat, and of course my nose felt like I'd snorted salt before jumping into the ocean and having water rush up my nose, but I could deal with it. By the evening last night, I noticed my packing turning red with blood. Now today, I feel more tired, and pain is the same as yesterday. The main issue is this packing. I can't breathe out of my nose abd I can feel it is filled with blood and I have postnasal drip. Definitely mentally prepare for this feeling, because you can easily start freaking out. Packing coming out tomorrow and then I can go home. I hope I'll be able to breathe when they take it out.
